Position Statement
What if the station was not just somewhere you go to wait aimlessly for your train to arrive? When most people picture going to the train station they imagine sitting on the platform waiting a late train to arrive. Residents of the outer Melbourne suburbs often suffer from lengthy waits between trains, sometime up to an hour or 40 minutes between trains resulting in a lot of dead time between trains. By adding simple conveniences to the station, it becomes a place that people associate with enjoyment and practicality as well as the accessibility of transport. With the addition of shops to the north of Cardinia Station people will go to the station not only to catch a train but to enjoy a coffee or food as well. The neighbouring playground will encourage locals to bring their families to enjoy the culture of the area and meet other residents.
In the near future, the south of the station site will be the subject of a huge development by Delfin. Their plan is to add mass housing as well as a large shopping precinct near the station. The new shops in the north of the site will counter balance this as well as form an entrance to this new exciting area. Before the development is built, locals will begin to associate the station area as a leisure and retail precinct. Then, as the southern shops are built, the north will remain an individual multipurpose area exclusively part of the station itself providing these different facilities. The shops will not only be solely for users of the train but also give to the residents a local community.
